Transitioning from School to College
When making the decision on what to study after school, and where to do this, it is only natural to have questions. In this section we tackle some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive when we head into schools.
Discovering Yeovil College and Applying - FAQs:
Visit us! Whether that be through an Open Event, or a bespoke campus tour, the best way to get to know us is by immersing yourself in Yeovil College life on our campus.
We often explain choosing a college as having a gut feeling. We encourage you to visit multiple colleges, sixth forms and education providers. Every single one will provide you with a different experience and feeling, use this to help you pick an environment where you will thrive.

Our application process runs through the entire year, as we recognise that plans change. We strongly encourage you to get your application in as early as possible to secure your place at Yeovil College.
Once your place is secured, there is flexibility to change your programme of study if you change your mind. The important thing is that you are in the system!
If you’re considering A Levels, we recommend that your application is submitted ahead of your Year 11 Christmas break. Seats fill up quickly on our A Level programme, and with every learner selecting three courses each, we would hate to see anyone disappointed if a class becomes full occupied.

In person – Every single one of our Open Events hosts a live application zone, where you can be supported to make your application, following conversations with our industry-expert lecturers.
Paper form – In the back of our prospectus is a paper application, which you can complete and send back to us through the free-post address at the bottom of the application.
If you have any questions or need further support, contact iZone@yeovil.ac.uk.
Your interview will take place with our enrolment team who will clarify your details and confirm your chosen study programme.
This informal chat will take place over the phone, outside of school hours. Please note, the call may come through from an unknown number.
Following a successful interview, you will receive an email offering your place and sharing further details on what happens next.
This all depends on how you learn best. Everyone learns differently, and what’s right for someone else may not be right for you!

Studying at Yeovil College – FAQs:
Yes! Our students go on a variety of educational visits to support their learning. Previous visits have included the Old Trafford Stadium, Weymouth Fire Station, London Museum of Brands, Barcelona, Iceland, London, Hinkley Point, to name just a few.
You can change your course within the first half term of the academic year. If you need to do this, we would highly recommend changing course as soon as you have made this decision, this means that you will have less to catch up on as you transfer into a new area.
Every learner will have study periods factored into their timetable. During this time, you can access our Learning Resource Centre to complete assignments and revision. It is expected that for every hour in the classroom, a learner matches this with an hour of independent study.
This is dependent on your study programme. A Level learners are typically in for 5 days a week, whereas T Level learners are likely to have a day of placement a week which adjusts their timetable.
Every learner will receive their timetable after attending their New Students’ Day in the June before a September start.
Yes, all our learners will complete a form of work experience as part of their study programme to enhance their learning. The amount you’re required to complete is dependent on the level you are studying, it will range between 35 to 150 hours.
Again, this depends on how you learn best. If you are studying a T Level, Vocational Qualification, A Level programme or an Apprenticeship, once you have completed a Level 3 programme and achieved the relevant amount of UCAS points, you will be able to progress to university.
Yes, Yeovil College are a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ institution. This means that students are expected to have a suitable device to use both onsite and offsite to enable learning. Having spent around £2.4 million on an ambitious and innovative connectivity project, Yeovil College has significantly developed its bandwidth and connectivity to enable a flexible and collaborative learning experience, like no other.
A Levels – FAQs:
You can take up to three different A Level subjects at our Kingston Sixth Form Centre.
All A Level students will be offered the opportunity to undertake a research-based Extended Project Qualification as part of their A Level study programme. The EPQ is designed to develop research skills, analytical reflection and project management skills. The EPQ also provides an additional grade which can increase UCAS Tarriff Points.
Vocational Qualifications – FAQs:
The simple answer is no. Taking more than one Vocational qualification would not allow you to focus and complete the work needed in both qualifications, ultimately harming your end results. It can be hard to decide on your Vocational qualification, but our website is home to lots of resources that can support you in making that decision including; campus tours, course introductions, taster sessions and our interactive prospectus.
This is dependent on the course you select and the level you are studying. Many of our programmes will include exams, however your lecturers will support you in preparing for these exams well in advance of taking them.
T Levels – FAQs:
They follow GCSEs and are equivalent to 3 A Levels. They bring classroom and work placement together, on a course designed with employers and businesses.
One pathway is not better than another, but one pathway will suit you more than another. Depending on your style of learning, your ability to sit exams, and your want of practical experience, every pathway approaches this differently.
T Levels combine 80% classroom learning with a substantial 20% industry placement to blend practical skills, theoretical study and exposure to the workplace.
Apprenticeships – FAQs:
You need to find an employer with an apprenticeship role available and apply for this, as well as the programme at Yeovil College. However, as an apprenticeship is a job, the perfect vacancy may not exist at the time you are looking to apply. We will support you to discover other similar opportunities, but we strongly recommend that you apply for the full-time course equivalent of your apprenticeship to ensure that you have a back-up option in place. Contact our Apprenticeships team for further advice – studentrecruitment@yeovil.ac.uk
You are eligible for an apprenticeship if:
- You are aged 16 or over.
- You live and have the right to work in England.
- You are not in full-time education.
- You do not already hold an equivalent or higher-level qualification in the subject of your apprenticeship.
