English, Maths & ESOL

Mastering English, Maths and ESOL is crucial for your educational journey, as these skills are essential for success in any career. No matter the field, these abilities are always in demand.

At Yeovil College we offer the following English and Maths qualifications:

  • GCSE English
  • GCSE Maths
  • Functional Skills English
  • Functional Skills Maths
  • Intensive 1 or 2 block weeks teaching and exam for both English and Maths

Qualifications take the form of formal face-to-face teaching. They offer a level of flexibility, blended teaching, revision, support and plenty of practice and mock examinations, and take place either during the day or in the evening. Whilst exams take place in May, June, and June/July for block weeks, we also host a November resist option for learners who were extremely close to achieving their GCSE qualification and just need extra time and support to achieve their target grade of 4 or above.

WHY ARE ENGLISH AND MATHS SKILLS CRITICAL TO YOUR CAREER?

In the current workforce, most employers expect a certain level of English and Maths comprehension, particularly in employees who are looking to gain promotion, move into leadership and management positions or commence an apprenticeship. GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above is an expectation on CVs and regularly forms part of the person specification on job descriptions.

For Example:

  • Beauticians need to be able to calculate prices and order stock;
  • Plumbers must be able to price up jobs and buy materials;
  • Health and Social Care employees need to communicate effectively with patients and people within their care;
  • Catering staff must be able to check stock levels and re-order food and drink;
  • Engineers need to calculate drawings accurately;
  • A Paramedic needs to have good communication skills to look after their patient and work within a team.

If you’re a school-leaver and have not yet achieved minimum requirements, then English and/or Maths will form part of your study programme, and you will study these subjects every week.

If you are an adult (19+), we have a whole range of separate adult-only classes, delivered during the day, in an evening or via intensive block weeks or block fortnights.
