Skills Bootcamps
Skills Bootcamps are short, intense, free, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks for adults aged 19 or over and are being developed by the Government as part of the Lifetime Skills Guarantee and plan for Jobs.Skills Bootcamp give people the opportunity to build up valuable sector-specific skills based on local employer demand. Skills Bootcamps are primarily aimed at delivering flexible training at levels 3-5 (medium to higher level technical skills), and level 2 in some sectors. Skills Bootcamps are co-designed or shaped with employers to respond to their skills shortages.
At Yeovil College we have delivered and will continue to deliver a variety of Skills Bootcamps for individuals and Employers in the following areas, with more areas being developed:

I AM AN EMPLOYER AND WOULD LIKE TO SEND MY EMPLOYEES ON THE COURSE.
If you are an employer and would like to refer one or more of your staff onto a Skills Bootcamp to upskill for a new role or opportunity within their existing role, you can receive a discount from 70% – 90% on the course fee depending on the size of your organisation. Your staff will also need to meet mandatory eligibility criteria.
Frequently Asked Questions
Skills Bootcamps are short, intense, courses of up to 16 weeks of face-to-face or online (this will vary across Bootcamps) delivery each week, plus additional self-directed learning.
Employability sessions and one to ones, delivered by our specialist careers team, will run alongside the core delivery, and culminate in career matching activities and support individuals into work or a career change, or progression within job role using the skills developed on the Skills Bootcamp.
Our Skills Bootcamps are suitable for anybody wanting to:
- Upskill in their current job using the skills developed within the Bootcamp, with the support of their employer.
- Upskill those who are unemployed, but who want to gain a deeper understanding of the sector for a future role in this area and looking to move into employment within the chosen sector.
- Upskill existing knowledge for a career change or to gain employment in the chosen industry sector.
- Learn new methods of operation to grow your business.
There are three eligible routes onto a Skills Bootcamp:
- Unemployed (self-referral)
- Self-employed (self-referral)
- Employed (employer referred)

Unemployed (Self-referral) (fully funded)
- Be aged 19+
- Have the right to live and work in the UK.
- Agree to provide mandatory personal data and supplementary information on their employment outcomes for up to 6 months following completion of the Skills Bootcamp
- Be looking for a new job role using the skills developed and work closely with the Careers Advisor to apply for industry specific job opportunities and attend interviews.
- Meet the requirements and/or prerequisites for the specific Skills Bootcamp.
- Study one bootcamp from the consortium in a financial year.
- Need to commit to attending weekly study and additional self-study each week.
Self-employed (self-referral) (fully funded)
- Be aged 19+
- Have the right to live and work in the UK.
- Agree to provide mandatory personal data and supplementary information on their employment outcomes for up to 6 months following completion of the Skills Bootcamp
- Commit to provide evidence that skills developed will be used to grow business via a business plan.
- Provide evidence that by using the skills developed traffic to your website/social media has increased.
- Meet the requirements and/or prerequisites for the specific skills Bootcamp, select the bootcamp for more information.
- Study one bootcamp from the consortium
- Need to commit to attending 6 hours of study and additional self-study each week.
Employed (co-funded by employer – your employer will be supporting your training by paying a contribution)
- Be aged 19+
- Have the right to live and work in the UK.
- Agree to provide mandatory personal data and supplementary information on their employment outcomes for up to 6 months following completion of the Skills Bootcamp
- Agreed with employer to attend Skills Bootcamp and looking for increased responsibility/promotion to a different role which utilises the skills acquired through your Skills Bootcamp within 6 months of completion of the course.
- Meet the requirements and/or prerequisites for the specific skills Bootcamp, select the bootcamp for more information.
- Study one bootcamp from the consortium
- Need to commit to attending weekly study and additional self-study each week.
Eligibility criteria:
To succeed on our Skills Bootcamps, you are recommended to have:
- A minimum of a level 2 qualification in English and Math
- In addition, some of our Skills Bootcamps will have specific eligibility criteria, please read the criteria on the individual Bootcamp course information pages.
If you are an individual attending the Skills Bootcamp and are unemployed, self-employed or in employment then the Skills Bootcamp is fully funded and free to you IF you meet the eligibility criteria.
If you are an employer who wishes to refer your employees to a Skills Bootcamp to upskill and support them with career progression opportunities using the skills developed, then you will receive a discount ranging from 70% – 90%, depending on the size of the company.
Following your application to study a Skills Bootcamp, you will be asked to provide both a CV and a short covering letter to let us know your current skills and why you want to complete the Skills Bootcamp.

Skills Bootcamps are jointly designed and delivered by our delivery specialists and employer partners, so you can be confident you are learning and developing the relevant skills important to employers.
Throughout the Skills Bootcamp, and in addition to the core delivery, you will take part in employability sessions and have the opportunity to have one to one sessions to support you with preparing for, job application completion, interviews and recruitment events with our industry partners, giving you the opportunity to network and connect with employers looking for these skills.
Yeovil College works closely with Industry around the South West and will provide employment opportunities through our partners and from Job Searches.

If you are employed and your employer is supporting you through a Skills Bootcamp. You will have the chance to apply for progression opportunities within your company or added responsibilities and or enhanced skills and knowledge to your current role using the skills developed and enhanced.
