YEOVIL COLLEGE CELEBRATES MAJOR MILESTONE AS THE NEW CONSTRUCTION INNOVATION CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENS

Yeovil College has reached another significant milestone in its ambitious £60+ million Big Build campus transformation project, with the official opening of its brand‑new Construction Innovation Centre; a multimillion‑pound facility that will redefine construction training for learners across the region.

The opening was formally marked with a symbolic key‑handover ceremony, as construction partners BAM presented the building key to the Department for Education (DfE) and Yeovil College leadership team. This moment celebrated the completion of one of the flagship buildings within the multi‑million redevelopment programme happening on the college campus.

A LANDMARK FACILITY FOR FUTURE CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS

The Construction Innovation Centre is designed to elevate the learning experience for students entering construction and the built environment sectors. The vast, two-story facility includes:

  • Industry‑standard workshops
  • Specialist equipment aligned with modern construction practices
  • Future‑focused learning environments designed around progression into employment or higher‑level study.

This innovative space will support learners across a wide range of disciplines including carpentry, bricklaying, electrical installation, plumbing, and multi‑skills trades, providing students with the tools, environment, and expertise required by the evolving construction industry, forming the second new construction facility to open on  the college site within the last two years.

PART OF YEOVIL COLLEGE’S £60+ MILLION CAMPUS TRANSFORMATION

The Construction Innovation Centre is the second major building completed as part of Yeovil College’s transformative Big Build Programme, which is a once‑in‑a‑generation redevelopment programme funded through the Department for Education.

This strategic investment is reshaping the campus with modern, sustainable, and industry‑aligned buildings designed to meet the needs of future learners and employers.

Key milestones within the Big Build include:

YEOVIL’S INSTITUTE OF SPORT (OPENED OCTOBER 2025)

The first new building to open under the Big Build programme, the Yeovil Institute of Sport, has already delivered a step‑change in sports education in the region.
The institute features:

  • A fully equipped sports performance suite
  • Specialist teaching areas
  • Indoor training spaces
  • Expanded fitness and conditioning facilities.

It has quickly become a thriving hub for both academic and practical sports training and provided the blueprint for further specialist facilities across the campus.

FORTHCOMING MULTI-DISCIPLINARY WESSEX LEARNING CENTRE (Opening July 2027)

Following the Construction Innovation Centre, the next phase of the Big Build Transformation includes the completion of a major teaching centre – The Wessex Learning Centre – which is currently in development and due to open in July 2027.

This impressive building will:

  • Provide cutting‑edge general teaching classrooms
  • House several curriculum areas, including A Levels, hair & Beauty, hospitality, business, IT, foundation learning, plus classroom spaces for engineering and automotive.
  • Introduce modern, central social, eating and self-directed study space for learners
  • Bring together students in a collaborative, digitally advanced learning environment.

Once complete, the teaching block will support thousands of learners each year and cement Yeovil College’s position as one of the most future‑focused educational institutions in the South West.

A NEW ERA

Principal & Chief Executive of Yeovil College, Mark Bolton, said:

“The opening of our Construction Innovation Centre represents another transformative moment for Yeovil College. As the Big Build progresses, each new building enhances the outstanding opportunities available to our learners, and today’s handover from BAM to the DfE and Yeovil College marks the start of an exciting chapter for construction education in our community.”

BAM representatives added their congratulations, acknowledging the collaborative partnership and the significant impact the building will have on local skills and industry growth.

Tim Chell, Western Region Director at BAM, said:

“Handing over the Construction Innovation Centre at Yeovil College is a proud moment for everyone involved. This facility represents far more than a new building, it is an investment in the future of our industry and the communities we serve. At a time when the construction sector faces a critical skills shortage, creating inspiring, industry-standard learning environments is essential to attracting and developing the next generation of talent.

Throughout the project, we have worked closely with the college to give students meaningful insight into construction careers, from site engagement and industry talks to practical learning activities alongside our project teams and partners. We are passionate about creating clear pathways from education into employment, and this centre will play a vital role in equipping students with the skills, confidence and ambition to succeed.”

ENABLING SUTURES AND SUPPORTING REGIONAL INDUSTRY

The Construction Innovation Centre will play an essential role in developing a skilled construction workforce for Somerset and beyond, aligning training with employer needs and supporting the region’s economic growth.

With world‑class facilities already open and more on the horizon, Yeovil College’s Big Build is rapidly reshaping the educational landscape and creating a campus ready for the next generation of learners.

Student Opinion

Tamara Andrews:

“It’s really good that we’ve got the new construction building as it gives us all the opportunity to do our own segments of work. We can all work individually and focus more on what we want to specialise in. It also provides us with lots more space – the previous workshop was cramped and now it’s more specialised into what we’re doing.”

Jack Rocks

“I really like the new Construction Centre; it’s nice and modern with all the room we need so we’re no longer in cramped spaces. The new facilities mean we can progress in our development and hopefully succeed in the future”

Benjamin Newman

“I’m excited for new learning experiences, with more room so we can have more opportunities to be hands on.”
