Qualification Gained
After The Course
An English GCSE qualification will enable you to progress into a range of different areas of study, such as Access courses, university degree courses or apprenticeship courses. It forms the minimum requirement for many careers such as nursing, teaching or the police force.
What Will I Learn
Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to improve on your reading and writing skills through a carefully planned curriculum designed to build on previous knowledge and skills.
You will learn to analyse a range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, by studying the effects of the language and structural devices authors use to create a particular text type.
You will also be taught to effectively compare and contrast different text types from different eras through a range of different analytical lenses.
You will also have the opportunity to put these ideas into practise to improve your creative writing skills, as well as writing non fiction texts for particular purposes and audiences.
The writing programme will aim to build your knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation so that you will be able to communicate clearly and effectively.

Teaching Learning and Assessment
Teaching and learning will primarily take place in the classroom environment where you will be encouraged to participate in a range of activities designed to provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge.
There will be an expectation to carry out some home-study activities every week which will relate to the topic that you will be learning about.
Teaching is designed to be inclusive and provide everyone with the same opportunities to learn, so there will be regular meetings with your teacher to talk about progress and any issues that may arise.
All work that is produced will be marked in a timely fashion with appropriate feedback to enable you to progress quickly. There are various assessment points in the year to prepare you for the exams, by testing not only your new-found knowledge but also your exam skills.
As an adult learner at Yeovil College you will be able to access a range of support and services (during college working hours), including our dedicated Learning Resource Centre, a wealth of resources from our team of expert careers advisors, and a range of wellbeing support.
