Course Overview

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first-stage teaching qualification that will give candidates a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer. It is suitable for those just starting out on their career or those wanting to start a career in teaching. The course will give you the toolkit needed to plan, deliver, and assess effective teaching and learning.

This course is delivered part time over 36 weeks or 1 academic year. Classes are 3.5 hours on a Wednesday evening. You will need to evidence a minimum 30 hours teaching delivery over the duration of the course.

Work Experience & Industry Placements

All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service, must have access to a minimum of 30 hours of teaching.

After The Course

Following this course, some candidates progress their Initial Teacher Training journey by moving on to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. What Will I Learn

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector, including:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Planning to meet the needs of learners
  • Delivering education and training
  • Assessing learners
  • Using resources
  • Inclusive practice.

English And Maths

This course will support the development of your academic writing. You will be introduced to strategies for research, referencing and citation and the production of written assignments.

Our Lecturers

This course is delivered by a combination of highly experienced and qualified lecturers and industry experts.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

Teaching and learning will be through a mix of taught sessions, in-class group work and teacher-led discussions. Active participation in these activities will enable the best outcome as candidates gain peer support and learn from each other’s experiences. As well as written assignment work, there is a requirement for a minimum of 30 hours teaching/training practice in a work placement, either voluntary or paid, and a minimum of three teaching/training practice observations, which must reach the required standard of practice. Candidates will also be required to complete a portfolio of their teaching evidence.

Tutorials are scheduled 3 times per year and are also available upon request.

Course Expenses

Course fees are £1,417. A course textbook is recommended for purchase at induction or available as an eBook from our Learning Resource Centre.

Additional costs may be covered by our financial assistance bursary which you can apply for once you have had your place confirmed and at that point, you will be provided with the bursary application form.

How Will I Be Assessed

It is anticipated that candidates will provide evidence that they have met the criteria in a number of ways, and should include:

  • Assignments - to evidence the knowledge based assessment criteria
  • Practice requirements - A minimum of 30 hours of practice. Evidence of working with groups of learners. Practice must be in a teaching and learning environment.
  • Observation requirements - Observations should be appropriately spaced throughout the whole programme and take into account the stage of a candidate’s progress. There will be a minimum of three observations of practice.
  • Completion of your teaching portfolio

Entry Requirements

This course requires candidates to hold GCSEs in English and maths at grade C / 4, or an equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills Level 2).

Candidates must arrange their teaching placement before starting the course

Required Experience

You will need to be in a teaching or training role in a paid or voluntary work placement.
