Yeovil College Launches New Initiative to Attract Construction Professionals into Teaching
Yeovil College is inviting construction professionals from across the region to attend its “Build the Next Generation” event on 6th May 2026, aimed at showcasing flexible and supported pathways into teaching.
The event is designed for individuals working in trades such as bricklaying, carpentry, electrical installation, plumbing, site management and multi‑trade disciplines, who may have considered sharing their expertise with the next generation of skilled workers. Crucially, attendees do not need any prior teaching experience to explore these opportunities.
Flexible Routes into a New Career
Yeovil College is offering construction professionals the chance to begin their teaching journey with as little as one day a week, creating a smooth transition that allows individuals to remain in industry while they explore a new career.
Flexible entry routes include:
- Shadowing experienced teachers
- Supporting practical workshops
- Technician roles
- Volunteering through a low‑pressure “try before you buy” model.
All new starters will receive full guidance, mentoring and training.
A Career That Builds Futures
The college emphasises that moving from the tools to teaching does not mean leaving a trade behind; instead, it provides the chance to have a long‑term impact on young people entering the sector. Those who join Yeovil College as teaching or support staff can expect:
- More predictable hours
- Improved work–life balance
- Paid holidays, including an additional Christmas break
- Free qualifications and professional training
- A supportive team environment
- The opportunity to shape the future construction workforce.
Try Before You Commit
To help individuals explore the world of teaching at their own pace, Yeovil College offers a flexible volunteer programme. Participants can:
- Observe lessons
- Support hands-on practical sessions
- Meet the construction teaching team
- Experience the workshop environment first-hand.
Volunteering can take place over a week, fortnight, month, or even up to six months, depending on availability.
Open Invitation for 6th May
The College is encouraging anyone with construction experience, whether recently qualified or with decades in the industry, to attend the event, meet the team and discover how their skills can make a lasting impact on learners.
Can’t Attend? Book a Call-Back
