Families Cook Up a Storm at Yeovil College’s ‘Ready Steady Cook’ Challenge

Families from the local community recently came together at Yeovil College for a fun and inspiring evening of culinary creativity, as part of a ‘Ready Steady Cook’ themed event celebrating the end of a four-week family cooking course.

Each participating family was presented with a mystery box of staple ingredients—such as rice, pasta, oats, tinned fruit, and tuna—alongside access to a range of store cupboard essentials provided by the College’s kitchen. Their challenge: to create a two-course meal using only the ingredients provided and the skills they had developed over the past month.

The event marked the culmination of a four-week programme designed to empower families with the knowledge and confidence to prepare nutritious, budget-friendly meals at home. Under the guidance of Yeovil College staff, families learned how to make the most of everyday ingredients to create delicious and wholesome dishes.

The results on the night were nothing short of impressive, with families producing a variety of creative meals including pasta bakes, fruit crumbles, oat bakes, and even homemade cakes. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, teamwork, and a shared sense of achievement.

To celebrate their efforts, each family was presented with a Yeovil College Goody Bag hamper, generously supported by the College’s Higher Education, Adult Learning, and Essential Employability teams. The hampers included herbs, spices, sauces, and other flavour-boosting ingredients to help families continue their cooking journey at home.

“This event was a fantastic way to bring families together and showcase the skills they’ve developed,” said a Yeovil College spokesperson. “We’re proud to support our community in building confidence in the kitchen and making healthy, affordable meals a part of everyday life.”

Yeovil College continues to offer a wide range of community-focused programmes aimed at supporting lifelong learning and practical skills development.
