Course Overview

The Level 2 Certificate in Barbering is a vocational qualification that has been designed to develop a limited number of barbering skills to a high level of occupational ability and will prepare you to enter the men's hairdressing sector as a unisex hairdresser.

This qualification includes the units to prepare you to work effectively as a junior unisex hairdresser, including 4 main units such as: client consultation for hair services, cutting men's hair, cutting facial hair and following health and safety in the salon.

This qualification will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to advise and consult with men on the type of haircut and facial hair shaping the way they want, but just as importantly what is suitable for them. You will also learn how to work in a safe manner throughout the service protecting both yourself and your clients.

Alongside the Certificate in Barbering you will complete a stand alone unit in shaving services and a level 2 award in head massage.

Work Experience & Industry Placements

There is a requirement for work experience in a Barbers/salon one day a week (100 Hours) to give you the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours to successfully build your experience. This needs to be found prior to starting in September. Your placement will begin in October 2026.

Qualification Gained

Level 2 Certificate in Barbering, Level 2 Award in head massage and a stand alone unit on Shaving services.

After The Course

You can progress on to the Level 3 Diploma in Barbering or Level 2 Barbering professional Apprenticeship.

Health and Safety

Please note that specific modules may vary over time in line with student feedback, employer input, awarding body changes, sector requirements, and lecturer expertise.

Level 2 Award in Head Massage.

Stand alone unit in providing shaving skills.

English And Maths

Maths and English Grades 4 and above.

Course Expenses

You will need to purchase kit and uniform which will cost approx. £400, plus additional trips as required.

Entry Requirements

Good knowledge of Maths and English (Grade 4 or above) is required.

You will be required to take part in a practical skills scan to determine your starting point and natural flare for Barbering.

Required Experience

No previous experience is required, but industry placement 1 day a week (100 Hours) is required as part of your course. This placement needs to be sourced prior to September and will begin in October 2026.
