Course Overview

Year 1 Electrical is a full time programme designed for learners who have not had any prior electrical training. Learners studying on this programme will develop a range of basic practical hand skills and theoretical knowledge.

Work Experience & Industry Placements

Learners will complete a range of industry related activities, ranging from specific site visits, guest speakers and toolbox talks. Learners will also complete 35hrs of work experience in industry.

Qualification Gained

L1 Diploma in Electrical Installation

After The Course

Most learners progress onto year 2 of the electrical installation programme, or gain employment or apprenticeship in the electrical installation industry.

What Will I Learn

By undertaking this qualification you will explore a wide range of different electrical containment systems, accessories and cables types used in the electrical industry.

English And Maths

Learners who do not already hold a Maths and / or English qualification at grade 4 or above will study these subjects as part of their college qualification

Our Lecturers

Neil is an electrical lecturer within Construction here at YC. He has been in the electrical industry, in a variety of roles, for nearly 40 years. Outside of college, Neil is a piano and double bass player and a supports his North Dorset community as a Parish Councillor

Paul has worked in Construction and Engineering industry for over 30 years. In that time he has worked at all levels of the industry and even directed his own company. Paul feels passionate about inspiring the next generation of Construction apprentices and is an advocate for mental health and more females in Construction

Andy has a vast experience ranging from a military background into 20+ years experience as an Electrician, and now 11 years as a lecturer performing at the highest standard. He studied at Yeovil College to become an Electrician while working for Scottish and Southern Energy where he established himself as an excellent electrician working an every aspect of the industry. Andy prides himself on providing an excellent experience for learners and outstanding student success.

Ben is a highly qualified teacher and electrical installer, including qualifications in electrical design, verification, and mental health awareness. He thrives on creating high-quality, engaging lessons that are fun, inspiring, and rooted in real-world site experiences. His learners thoroughly enjoy their sessions and consistently achieve outstanding pass rates. Outside of teaching, Ben enjoys travelling, paddleboarding, and playing the guitar.

Course Expenses

Learners will need to purchase their own PPE (Work trousers, boots, gloves high vis and safety spectacles). We also recommend learners purchase relevant tools as an investment, and a course textbook to support their studies. Learners who join us on new students day will be given a kit list to help them prepare for their course.

Throughout the course there will be trips and visits, for which a contribution may be required.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 (D - E) or above

Required Experience

None required for this level of the course, however learners who have electrical knowledge or experience and have achieved English and maths at grade 4 or above may be offered the year 2 programme.
