Carpentry Essentials
Course Overview
This course is designed as an initial taste of what it means to be a carpenter or joiner. You will get to experience working with timber in our fantastic workshops, under the guidance of our highly qualified trade professionals. You will learn the safety of working in the industry, and what possible careers there might be for you beyond this qualification. You’ll also come away with improved hand skills and confidence working with timber.
This course is perfect for you if you are interested in having a go at carpentry, whether it’s to gain confidence at home, or to move into a new industry. The course covers the basics of working with timber and prepares you for the next steps in your training.

After The Course
What Will I Learn
The course is predominantly practical, so you will do most of your training in the workshop, learning the different hand tools and power tools of carpentry and joinery, perfecting the skills to measure, mark, cut, shape and fix timber together in a range of industry scenarios. This will start with basic jointing techniques, and move onto more complicated tasks such as skirting boards or frame joints.
Over the duration of this programme you will also learn basic health and safety of the construction industry, and understand the different construction trades you may interact with. You will also consider how the industry can continue to develop sustainably.

Teaching Learning and Assessment
The Level 1 Award in Construction is a practical, hands-on course delivered in our state-of-the-art Construction Centre, giving learners real experience in a workshop environment. The course focuses on essential trade skills and is assessed through practical tasks, a portfolio of evidence, and a supporting workbook.
This well-rounded approach ensures learners build both confidence and capability, preparing them for further training or entry-level roles in the construction industry.
Course Expenses
The cost for this course is £150.

Additional costs may be covered by our financial assistance bursary which you can apply for once you have had your place confirmed and at that point, you will be provided with the bursary application form.
How Will I Be Assessed
Entry Requirements
It is recommended that you have a good level of written English to enable you to complete the workbook alongside your practical work, so we suggest that applicants to either a GCSE in English at grade C / 4, or an equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills Level 2).
