Certificate in Education and Training - Level 4
Course Overview
The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first-stage teaching qualification that will give you a fundamental understanding of key aspects of the role of the teacher/trainer in post 16 education. You will cover the principles of planning, delivering and assessing in education. You will also look at good practice in inclusive learning creating resources.
It is suitable for those just starting out on their career or those wanting to start a career in teaching. The course is studied over 36 weeks (one academic year). Lessons are timetabled for one half day per week.
Work Experience & Industry Placements
You must teach for a minimum of 30 hours of over the duration of the course.
Qualification Gained
Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training, awarded by City and Guilds, and regulated by the Office for Students.
After The Course
Following this course, some learners progress their Initial Teacher Training journey by moving on to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training or the Learning and Skills Teacher (LST) Level 5 Apprenticeship. What Will I Learn
You will study a range of units that will develop your specialist knowledge and skills. Modules currently offered include:
Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training Planning to meet the needs of learners Delivering education and training Assessing learners Using resources Inclusive practiceAlongside developing a range of subject-specific skills, this course also gives you the opportunity to develop transferable skills. These include self-reflection, academic writing, time management and communication.
Please be aware that modules studied may change periodically to reflect developments in the discipline, in response to student or stakeholder feedback, or as a result of regulatory body requirements. However, no significant changes to modules would be implemented without student consultation and feedback. Enrolled learners can always find the most up-to-date information about their modules and who is teaching them in their course handbook.

The course is taught by well qualified lecturers who are dedicated to ensuring student success through effective curriculum delivery and high-quality pastoral support. The team includes staff with relevant academic qualifications and sector expertise across a range of settings.
Teaching Learning and Assessment
A wide range of teaching approaches are used on the course in order to model the methods candidates can use in their own practice. You will be expected to apply these approaches to your own teaching and reflect on your progress.
A typical week has around three and a half hours of contact time in taught sessions, plus additional one-to-one support available on request. As with all higher education programmes, candidates are required to take ownership of their learning and development, and you should therefore expect to spend time studying with independence outside of lectures, carrying out independent reading and research to develop your knowledge.

Additional Costs: You may find it useful to prepare for the course by purchasing a textbook written specifically for the course. The Certificate in Education and Training by Ann Gravells provides a basic outline of course content and some learners have found this to be a useful introduction.
Depending on the nature and location of the placement you choose to undertake, you might also incur travel expenses.
How Will I Be Assessed
An assessment schedule, outlining all assessments and deadlines, will be issued at the start of the course.
Summative assessment methods include assignments, lesson observations and a portfolio of evidence. Your teaching will also be assessed through regular observations.
Entry Requirements
Entry Requirements: You must be aged 19+ and able to engage with the interview process as outlined below in order to confirm that the course is fully relevant to your needs and to discuss expectations. In addition, you must be able to provide evidence of your literacy and numeracy at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Grade C/4) and you should be qualified and experienced in the subject you are teaching (usually to a minimum of Level 3).
International Applicants: International applicants will be required to evidence English language skills - this could be an IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component, a grade 4 in GCSE English (or equivalent), or having recently completed a Level 3 qualification taught and assessed in the English language. Interviews: As part of the admissions process, applicants who meet the entry criteria for the course will be invited to attend an admissions interview with a member of staff from the course they are applying to. More information about the interview process can be found on the How to apply page.
Required Experience
You will need to be in a teaching or training role in a paid or voluntary work placement.
