Course Overview

The study of History produces a unique and challenging perspective regarding the relationship between ordinary people and the social economic and cultural situation they developed in. This course examines the issue of rights and freedoms in the modern world, with a particular focus upon 20th century American history and India’s struggle for independence from British rule.

After The Course

History is highly valued by all universities and is suitable for those intending to study a wide range of subjects. It can be of particular value to those wishing to study Politics, English, Law or Archaeology. History students go on to a variety of different careers such as teaching, practising law, retail, business, politics and even the entertainment industry.

What Will I Learn

Unit 1 - In Search of the American Dream: The USA 1917-96. This unit will consider the various influences on American society during this period including topics such as civil rights, impact of war and the development of popular culture. Unit 2 - India: 1914-48: The Road to Independence. This unit will consider the struggle undertaken by India to free itself from British rule and the consequences of independence. Unit 3 - The British Experience of Warfare 1790-1918. This unit will consider the development of the British armed forces over this period including several in-depth units that focus in on a particular conflict such as World War One and the war in the air. Unit 4: Coursework. This will be a 4000 word coursework piece that can be completed on a historical issue of your choice. For example, the causes of the Cold War, the collapse of the Roman Empire or the significance of Martin Luther King.

As a student, you will have weekly tutorials that are used for one to one support, progress updates, employability skills and preparation for University.

How Will I Be Assessed

You will follow the Edexcel History specification and will sit three exams. Paper 1 - In Search of the American Dream: the USA 1917-96 - worth 30% of your final grade. Paper 2 - India 1914-48: The Road to Independence - worth 20% of your final grade. Paper 3: The British Experience of Warfare 1790-1918 - worth 30% of your final grade. You will also complete one coursework piece of 4000 words - worth 20% of your final grade.

Entry Requirements

  • You will need five GCSEs at grades 9-4.
  • IncludingHistory and English Literature or Language at grade 9-5.
  • If you have missed a grade 4 in Maths by one grade it may be possible to re-sit GCSE maths in your first year.

Required Experience

No specific experience is required for this course but a keen interest in History is essential.
