Understanding Children and Young People's Mental Health - Level 2 Certificate
Course Overview
This free course, delivered remotely, is designed for people aged 19 and over who would like to increase their knowledge and awareness of the mental health of children and young people. You may already be working in this area, or may just want to be able to support the children and young people in your life.
The course is delivered via Teams, so you will need access to a device, private space to learn, and good internet connection for these sessions.

What Will I Learn
This qualification gives learners the opportunity to develop an understanding of the commonly associated mental health concerns of children and young people and then to learn how to support children and young people to maintain mental wellbeing.
The course content includes 5 units:
Unit 1: Understand children and young people’s mental health in context. Learners will understand the concept of mental health, how society views mental health and how this has changed over time, this will include learning associated legislation.
Unit 2: Understand factors which may affect children and young people’s mental health. Learners will understand the risk factors that could affect children and young people’s mental health and how these can be mitigated. They will also investigate how developmental changes and puberty can impact children and young people.
Unit 3: Understand children and young people’s mental health concerns. Learners will understand the behaviours displayed by children and young people which may indicate a cause for concern. You will also look at common, mental health concerns that are experienced by children and young people.
Unit 4: Understand the impact of children and young people’s mental health concerns. Learners will understand the importance of diagnosis, including the reluctance to diagnose.
Unit 5: Understand how to support children and young people with mental health concerns. Learners will explore the different support mechanisms available to children and young people, including health promotion, treatments and services available.

Teaching Learning and Assessment
Teaching and learning is designed to support all students to achieve. The course is delivered online, via teams, over 14 weeks. This course is entirely theory-based, with high levels of class and small group discussions.
As an adult learner at Yeovil College you will be able to access a range of support and services, including our dedicated Learning Resource Centre, a wealth of resources from our team of expert careers advisers, and a range of wellbeing support.

For students aged 19 and over, this course will be available free of charge, dependent upon your nationality and residency status.
The course is free of charge for UK nationals and those who have pre-settled or settled status or other right of abode, who have lived in the UK for the last three years. How Will I Be Assessed
Entry Requirements
This course requires a good level of written English, so we ask for applicants to hold either a GCSE in English at grade C / 4, or an equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills Level 2).
