Course Overview

This qualification provides the skills and knowledge needed to manage practice and lead others in residential childcare settings for children and young people. The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) serves as the required qualification under The Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015.

What Will I Learn

You will study a range of units that will develop your specialist knowledge and skills. These include development of children and young people, safeguarding, communication, positive relationships and attachment for children and young people. As well as focusing on how to support children and young people living within group situations, supporting social and emotional challenges, and supporting others who have experienced harm or abuse. Your sessions will be taught within your workplace as master class session, so there is no requirement to attend college.

English And Maths

It would be beneficial to have 4/C in Maths and English to support further progression in the future.

The course is taught by well qualified and experienced lectures who are dedicated to ensuring student success through effective curriculum delivery and high-quality pastoral support. The team includes staff with over 20 years relevant sector expertise.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

A typical week has a mixture of 1-2 contact hours with your assessor and blended learning approach, plus additional 1-1 support available by student request. As with all HE programmes, students are required to take ownership of their learning and development and should expect to spend time studying and completing assessment tasks with independence outside of lectures.

Course Expenses

The fee for this programme for students beginning in September 2023 is £2882.00. Dependent on individual circumstances, some students may be eligible to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan to support with their fee costs. For more information, visit www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan. There are no required additional costs for the programme. Whilst some students may choose to buy their own copies of certain key texts this isn't essential as relevant resources are available through the College's Learning Resources Centre.

How Will I Be Assessed

Throughout the course you will complete an initial assessment to help us understand your starting point and if there are specific support that is required to enable you to study successfully. You will be assessed using a range of methods including workplace observations, presentations, assignments, professional discussions, and practical assessments. Feedback will be provided to you in writing, along with information reflecting your performance and recommendations for improvement. These will be accessed via an online learning platform, which you will have your own access for. All your assessments will be completed in the workplace so there is no need for onsite college attendance.

Entry Requirements

To complete the course successfully you will need to be working in the role of Deputy or Manager, practice leader or senior care worker in an appropriate setting or have the opportunity to carry out responsibilities associated with these roles. You will also need to have completed your L3 or L4 Health and care qualification relevant to the profession.
