Counselling Skills - Level 2 Certificate
Course Overview
This course is designed for people aged 19 and over who would like an introduction to the use of counselling skills. You may have an interest in building a career in counselling or would like to be better equipped to support the people around you.
The course is delivered via Teams, so you will need access to a device, private space to learn, and good internet connection for these sessions.

What Will I Learn
This qualification gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately.
The course content includes 4 units:
Unit 1: Using Counselling skills. In this unit, learners will explore core counselling skills and how to use them in a helping relationship. You will learn strategies on how to start and end a helping relationship and gain an understanding of the boundaries that need to be considered when initiating a helping relationship.
Unit 2: Introduction to Counselling Skills Theories. In this unit, learners will discover the key elements of the main theoretical approaches to counselling: Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Person Centred.
Unit 3: Diversity and Ethics in the Use of Counselling Skills. In this unit, learners will learn about the concepts of diversity and ethics. Learners will explore and gain an understanding of anti-discriminatory practice, identify key aspects of ethical frameworks, and discover the importance of diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills.
Unit 4: Counselling Skills and Personal Development. In this unit, learners will develop self-understanding, identifying their own values and beliefs, and the ability to reflect on their personal qualities that are useful and relevant to helping roles. Learners will also identify and meet their own support needs.

Teaching Learning and Assessment
Teaching and learning is designed to support all students to achieve. The course is delivered online over 14 weeks. There are a mixture of skills practice and theory-based sessions, and you will have the chance to put the theory you learn into practice during your lessons.
As an adult learner at Yeovil College you will be able to access a range of support and services, including our dedicated Learning Resource Centre, a wealth of resources from our team of expert careers advisors, and a range of wellbeing support.

For students aged 19 and over, this course will be available free of charge, dependent upon your nationality and residency status.
The course is free of charge for UK nationals and those who have pre-settled or settled status or other right of abode, who have lived in the UK for the last three years. How Will I Be Assessed
Entry Requirements
This course requires a good level of written English, so we ask for applicants to hold either a GCSE in English at grade C / 4, or an equivalent (e.g. Functional Skills Level 2).
