After The Course

A maths GCSE qualification will enable you to progress into a range of different areas of study, such as Access courses, university degree courses or apprenticeship courses. It forms the minimum requirement for many careers such as nursing, teaching or the police force.

What Will I Learn

The subject content of the course falls into 5 topic areas set out below along with the approximate weighting given to each topic in the final exams:
Number 25%
Algebra 20%
Ratio 25%
Geometry 15%
Probability and statistics 15%

The GCSE maths course is designed to develop student confidence and fluency within mathematical skills, problem solving and reasoning, in preparation to use these skills within the workplace or personal lives and to progress their vocational education.

In line with the assessment methodology of non-calculator skills (two-thirds of the assessment) and calculator skills (one third of the assessment), learners are expected to use a calculator to support their learning in sessions.

Our Lecturers

All our lecturers are Maths specialists with many years experience of teaching adults GCSE Maths so you will be in safe hands.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

The key areas covered will be:
• Number
• Algebra
• Ratio/Proportion
• Geometry/Measure
• Probability
• Statistics

To encourage motivation and engagement topics are studied via a mixture of whole class, group or paired work. Lecturers will integrate traditional “pencil and paper style” with online resources & techniques, using a variety of websites and mixing this with class discussion to help learners problem solve thus leaving behind that common “skip it” approach that often impedes learning.

Examination:
This is taken in the form of 3 separate 1½hr papers (1 non-calculator, 2 using calculator) at the end of the academic year, usually through early to mid-June on pre-set, non-adjustable, nationally set dates.
