Course Overview

Our flexible start Functional Skills Maths courses at Yeovil College primarily aim to develop and enhance your understanding of, and confidence in using, maths skills in relation to work. The skills developed within these lessons will help you gain confidence within your problem-solving ability whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification in mathematics.

We have evening and daytime options available to you, so you can choose the right 2 hour class for your schedule.

With our flexible start dates, we're ready to start as soon as you are ready join us.

Qualification Gained

We offer City and Guilds Functional Skills Maths at Entry Levels, Level 1 and Level 2. These qualifications are nationally recognised qualifications.

After The Course

Depending on your level of Functional Skills Maths achieved, you may choose to progress onto the next level of the Functional Skills Maths course or complete our GCSE Maths course. When you achieve at Level 2, you may use this qualification to progress your career or go onto further education opportunities.

What Will I Learn

You will learn a variety of transferable skills and knowledge that can be used both in the workplace and in general everyday life.

Some of the topics that will be looked at include:
Working with numbers and proportional reasoning: Use of the four basic calculations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and the use of fraction, decimals, percentages and ratios. This includes understanding and calculating interest and discounts on items, scaling up or down measures for recipes and more, and knowing how to find what item/offer is the best buy.
Common shape, measure and space. Recognising and using the area, perimeter and volume of basic shapes, and converting between different measurements.
Data handling. Understanding what averages tell us about data and how to read and draw graphs to represent data.

Our Lecturers

All our lecturers are maths specialists with many years' experience of teaching adults in Functional Skills Maths. Our team of lecturers specialise in working with learners who find maths challenging and can break complex mathematics down into simple and easy to understand processes.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

The Functional Skills Maths exam is on-demand meaning that learners can sit this exam when they are ready. It comprises of one exam paper with two sections (non-calculator and calculator). Learners will be assessed on a variety of skills in the areas of: Use of Number, Shape and Measure, Handling Data and Problem Solving.

Course Expenses

For students aged 19 and over who don't yet hold their Functional Skills qualification (or equivalent), this course will be available free of charge, dependent upon your nationality and residency status*.

*The course is free of charge for UK nationals and those who have pre-settled or settled status or other right of abode, who have lived in the UK for the last three years. Funding for this course may also be available free to other students, dependent upon nationality and residency status - to find out more, contact our friendly iZone team.

How Will I Be Assessed

Throughout the course you will complete a selection of checks on your learning. These may comprise of online quizzes, in-class assessments, or practice papers. You will be expected to commit at least 2 hour per week to self-directed study, outside the hours of the course.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You will be expected to complete an initial assessment as part of your course to ensure you are working at the appropriate level for your needs.

Learners will benefit more from the course if they have access to a laptop to run Microsoft Teams where we will share resources and materials to support learning within the course.
