Course Overview

The level 3 laboratory technician apprenticeship (dental) is a new and innovate apprenticeship for those new the dental technician profession. This apprenticeship will not only embrace some of the traditional craft skills of a dental technician a such as casting models, making a range of dentures, crowns and bridges, but also will develop an individual’s skills in the fast-moving world of digital dentistry. This not only includes scanning, computer aided design, 3D printing and milling a range of dental appliances, as well as skills training the apprenticeship will also provide much needed knowledge and understanding of the dental technician of the future will need to build their career. Much of the learning will take in Yeovil colleges brand new, state of art “digital dental laboratory”, developing vital skills that can be taken back to and used in the workplace.

Qualification Gained

Level 3 completion of laboratory technician apprenticeship certificate - you will be able to work successfully in a dental laboratory and progress to the level 5 dental technician apprenticeship. (Registerable Qualification with GDC)

What Will I Learn

Traditional skills of a dental technician to include casting models, making special trays, bite registration , mouth guards, splints, orthodontic appliances and a range of dentures, crowns and bridges including repairs, additions and relining.. Digital Skills such as use of cad cam equipment, manipulation of digital images to design dentures, crowns, bridges and other dental appliances. 3 D printing and bespoke characterisation of dentures and other dental appliances. Milling using a range of materials to manufacture crowns.

English And Maths

Four GCSEs 3-9 including /or Level 2 Mathematics & English. You will need to have achieved English and Maths to undertake this course

Your lecturers & Assessors are specialists in developing your skills in the work place to progress to your next level. They have worked in industry and owned their own dental labs.

How Will I Be Assessed

This qualification is completed on a Day Release Model - with content delivered at Yeovil College in addition to Assessing & Progress Reviews in the workplace. Bespoke Models of delivery can also be considered such as block weeks of learning. Assessment will take place in the workplace, and through a range of assessments methods such as short answer papers, professional discussion and demonstration of dental appliances produced, including video, photographic evidence and detailed workplace work logs. You will be assessed against set Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours that have been developed by the industry throughout the programme. Your employer plays a large part in helping and supporting you becoming a competent Dental Laboratory Technician. Your final assessment known as End Point Assessment will take place at the end of your apprenticeship. You will use Smart Assessor to develop and evidence your portfolio.
