T Level Maintenance Engineering Technologies: Vehicles (September 2024 Start)

T Levels will give 16-19 year old learners the technical knowledge and practical skills that are valued by the industry. They follow immediately after GCSEs as a technical alternative to A-Levels. They are the biggest reform to vocational training in a generation, giving learners the skills, knowledge, and attitude to excel in the Automotive sector. The T Level programme includes the following compulsory elements: • Technical Qualification (TQ), which includes: o core engineering theory, concepts and skills o specialist automotive skills and knowledge • Industry placement with an automotive engineering employer • A minimum standard in maths and English if learners have not already achieved them at the start of their T Levels.

The industry placement runs for a minimum of 315 hours (45 days) overall and will give students practical insights into the sector and an opportunity to embed the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Successful completion of this qualification is recognised within the Automotive industry, you may decide to progress on to an apprenticeship, source direct employment in automotive sector or develop your knowledge further by enrolling on to a Higher Education course.

In the first year of this two year programme, you will learn the Engineering common core knowledge, in which you must pass two exams and an employer set project, areas of study for year one are: • Working within the engineering and manufacturing sectors • Engineering and manufacturing past, present, and future • Engineering representations • Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing • Essential science for engineering and manufacturing • Materials and their properties • Mechanical principles • Electrical and electronic principles • Mechatronics • Engineering and manufacturing control systems • Quality management • Health and safety principles and coverage • Business, commercial and financial awareness • Professional responsibilities, attitudes, and behaviours • Stock and asset management • Continuous improvement • Project and programme management In the second year you will study the vehicle specialism part of the qualification, including a range of topics associated with the industry and beyond. This will include but will not be limited to: • Fundamental health & safety practices associated with carrying out vehicle maintenance and repair • Fundamentals of mechanical and electrical systems within vehicle maintenance and repair • Safe and effective use of tools, equipment, machinery and technology • Quality control, assurance and improvement within maintenance, installation and repair of vehicles • Information and data used in vehicle maintenance and repair • Communication of vehicle maintenance and repair information

In order to study the T level you will need to have the following: 5 GCSE’s at the minimum grade of 4 and above, this must include your English Lit, Lang and Maths , you may also be expected to complete a group interview and complete a small diagnostic task to look at your level of current knowledge. You will also be expected to already have the following qualities: an interest in the way vehicles operate; able to demonstrate general analytical and mechanical skills, a capacity for mechanical reasoning and the potential to research, analyse and solve problems; well organised, methodical and good attention to detail; good spatial awareness; able to work in a team and to communicate well both orally and in writing.
