Course Overview

The Level 3 BTEC in Sport provides you with the knowledge, skills and understanding for a career in sport alongside access to high quality football coaching at Yeovil Town Football Club.

Based at Huish Park for 2.5 days a week and Yeovil College for 1.5 days you will study a range of units, such as Sports Coaching, Sports Psychology, Sport Development, which will support you in choosing your career pathway. The qualification is mapped to the employer led CIMSPA professional standards for job roles within sport and active leisure industries.

Work Experience & Industry Placements

Previous students have completed work experience at professional sports teams such as Yeovil Town FC, local primary and secondary schools, Yeovil District Hospital, Sports Coaching companies, Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Psychologists, Nutritionists, Fitness centres, and PE teaching.

Qualification Gained

Pearson BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development

Learners can progress to Diploma/Extended Diploma upon completion of Foundation Diploma

After The Course

Graduates have progressed to pursue careers locally, regionally and nationally in both the private and public sectors. Examples include Performance Analysts at Manchester United FC, PE Teacher, Sports Coach, teaching assistant and personal trainers. Additionally, previous students have gone onto successful careers in the military or other public services amongst other sectors.

What Will I Learn

Students will study a variety of units carefully selected to provide a balance of theory and practical input. Units include, but not limited to Sports Coaching, Sports Development, Anatomy and Physiology, Sports Analysis, and many more.

Through the football programme you will develop technical skills and tactical awareness through training sessions, fixtures, strength training and performance analysis sessions.

English And Maths

English and maths are vital in skills to successful work within the sports industry. You will have English and maths embedded within the units that you study with us to ensure competence in these areas.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

Lessons will consist of a mix of theory and practical sessions. You will take part in football training, fixtures, analysis and, where possible, links between practical demonstration and application to theory content will be highlighted and discussed.

Tutorials

Weekly tutorials used for one-to-one support, progress updates, employability skills and workshops, taster sessions and guest speakers.

Course Expenses

Compulsory sport kit to be ordered in advance of September 2026 from Yeovil Town FC.

Please note that optional trips and visits may incur additional fees.

How Will I Be Assessed

There will be a variety of assessment methods including practical demonstrations, written reports and presentations.

Entry Requirements

You need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including English and maths.

If you do not meet the requirements of this course, we recommend Sport Foundation Year (Level 2 Sport).

Required Experience

No previous experience required, however, a strong interest and desire to work in Sport is desirable alongside football skills and playing experience at an appropriate level.
