Mechanical fitting and assembly – Apprenticeship unit
After The Course
Following this course you will have developed mechanical engineering
skills to be embedded within your world of work.
What Will I Learn
On this unit, learners will develop the essential knowledge and practical
skills required for mechanical fitting and assembly in an engineering
environment. This includes understanding health and safety requirements,
interpreting engineering drawings, selecting and using appropriate tools and
equipment, and accurately measuring and preparing components. Learners will gain
hands-on experience assembling mechanical parts and sub-assemblies, applying
different fixing and fitting techniques, and carrying out quality checks. They
will also learn how to identify faults and ensure completed work meets required
standards, preparing them for effective performance in real-world engineering
roles.
How Will I Be Assessed
The unit is assessed primarily through a practical
skills assessment, where learners are required to complete a mechanical
fitting and assembly task under controlled conditions. This allows them to
demonstrate their ability to interpret engineering information, select and use
tools correctly, assemble components accurately, and follow safe working
practices. Assessment decisions are validated with employer input,
ensuring the standard of work reflects real industry expectations. There is no
formal end-point assessment as seen in full apprenticeships; instead, the focus
is on demonstrating occupational competence within the scope of the unit. In
some cases, an additional knowledge check or supporting evidence (such as
observation records or questioning) may be used to confirm understanding,
depending on the provider’s approach and any awarding organisation requirements.
