Yeovil College Officially Opens Its New Construction Innovation Centre

Yeovil College proudly marked the official opening of its Construction Innovation Centre today, a state‑of‑the‑art training facility designed to transform construction skills delivery across the South West. The building was formally opened by Adam Dance, MP, who led a ceremonial ribbon‑cutting in front of employers, dignitaries, community leaders, representatives from funding partners, the Department for Education (DfE), and partners from BAM, the Contractors delivering the project.

The Construction Innovation Centre is the second major milestone within Yeovil College’s ambitious campus redevelopment, made possible through the College’s successful securing of over £60 million of capital investment from the DfE. Delivered in partnership with BAM, this project represents one of the most substantial investments in further education across Somerset, North Dorset, and West Dorset in recent decades.

Responding directly to the critical skills gap facing the construction industry, the new facility provides an additional 1,700m² of specialist technical training space, enabling the College to support more than 100% growth in both Construction Apprentices and full‑time learners.

Designed with employer insight and future workforce needs at its core, the centre offers advanced environments for traditional trades as well as cutting‑edge training in Green Construction and Retrofit Technologies, equipping learners with the expertise needed to help the sector reduce environmental impact for future decades.

Guests at the ceremony included influential regional stakeholders, employer partners from across the construction and engineering sectors, and representatives from local government and education. Their attendance reflected the strong collaboration underpinning the project and the shared commitment to addressing local and regional workforce needs.

Speaking at the event, Mark Bolton, Principal & CEO of Yeovil College, said:

“The Construction Innovation Centre represents a defining moment for Yeovil College and for the future of construction skills in our region. This outstanding facility has been shaped through close collaboration with our employer partners, supported through significant investment from the Department for Education, and brought to life by the expertise and professionalism of BAM.

“It will provide exceptional opportunities for our learners and make a meaningful contribution to the development of a skilled, sustainable, and futureready construction workforce.”

The opening of the Construction Innovation Centre marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Yeovil College; one focused on innovation, partnership, sustainability, and raising aspiration for generations of learners.

Mark continued:

“Our ambition is bold and it stretches far beyond this campus. Today’s opening is just one step in a much bigger plan to lead construction skills across South Somerset, Dorset and the wider Wessex region.

“We’re already looking ahead, investing in new facilities that will bring even more trades on board, from plastering and painting to highways and modular build, creating a complete pipeline aligned to industry and driven by opportunity.

“There was a time when some might have called us ‘little old Yeovil’. What you’re seeing here today proves just how much that has changed. Yeovil College is stepping forward, standing tall, and building something ambitious, impactful, and impossible to ignore.”

The Final Piece of The Jigsaw – Wessex Learning

As the final piece of the Big Build transformation, the Wessex Learning Centre will become the academic heart and intellectual anchor of the new Yeovil College campus. This landmark, L‑shaped building, replacing the long‑serving Kingston and Bridge buildings – each standing for more than six decades – will exceed 10,000m² of first‑class, purpose-built accommodation.

Designed to elevate every aspect of the learner journey, the Centre will house nearly 100 state‑of‑the‑art classrooms, inspirational study zones, modern social spaces, and innovative digital infrastructure, creating a vibrant hub of academic activity, collaboration, and community.

With a total site footprint of 12,500m² Gross Internal Area, the development represents a significant enhancement to the College estate, increasing overall campus GIA from 18,000m² to 21,687m². This additional capacity will support the exceptional growth experienced by the College in recent years – including a £9+ million increase in turnover, taking the organisation well beyond the £21 million threshold.

The Wessex Learning Centre stands not only as a symbol of the College’s ambition, but as a foundation for decades of educational excellence, placing Yeovil College at the forefront of transformational learning environments in the region.
