Yeovil College University Centre Launches New BSc (Hons) Social Work Degree for September 2026

Yeovil College University Centre has announced the launch of a new BSc (Hons) Social Work degree, delivered in partnership with the University of the West of England, with the first cohort due to begin in September 2026.

The three-year, full-time programme has been designed to equip students with the academic knowledge, professional skills, and extensive practical experience required to pursue a rewarding career in social work. Delivered in person at the Yeovil campus, the course combines classroom-based learning with substantial placement opportunities to prepare graduates for real-world practice.

Social work plays a vital role in supporting individuals, families, and communities, particularly those experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. Throughout the programme, students will explore key themes including law and social policy, safeguarding, mental health, social justice, ethics, and inequality, alongside psychological and sociological theories that underpin effective social work practice.

A core feature of the degree is its strong emphasis on professional experience. Students will complete 170 days of mandatory placement, with 70 days in Year Two and 100 days in the final year, across a range of statutory, voluntary, independent, and private sector organisations. Placements may be based within a 50-mile radius of the College and will be supported by qualified practice educators and dedicated university link tutors.

The course will be taught by registered Social Workers with experience across a range of specialisms. Students will benefit from high-quality teaching, strong pastoral support, and opportunities for one-to-one academic guidance. Outside of placement periods, learners can expect between 8 and 14 hours of taught sessions per week, supported by independent study and professional development activities.

On successful completion of the programme, graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with Social Work England, enabling them to practice as qualified social workers working with adults or children. Graduates will be well positioned for employment within local authorities, health and social care services, voluntary and charitable organisations, and the independent or private sector. Many students may secure employment through their placement organisations, although this cannot be guaranteed. The qualification also provides a strong foundation for further postgraduate study, including Master’s degrees.

The BSc (Hons) Social Work degree is awarded by the University of the West of England (UWE) Bristol and regulated by the Office for Students. Applications are welcomed from both school leavers and mature students aged 21 and over, recognising the value of life experience alongside academic achievement. Applicants will be invited to attend an admissions interview, and successful candidates will be required to complete enhanced DBS and health checks prior to enrolment.

Prospective students and those seeking further information are encouraged to contact Yeovil College University Centre.
