Yeovil College students take on the controversial topics

Yeovil College Level 3 Performing Arts students perform ‘Rent The Musical – The School Edition’ for the first time in Somerset. For the vast majority of the cast, this was the first professional, full-length performance they have delivered.

Rent challenges the norm and deals with issues that some young adults face in today’s modern society. Rent is set in run down New York City, in the late 1980’s early 1990’s. The show takes us through a year in the life of a group of young unconventional bohemians, finding themselves and struggling to stay together during a time of economic turmoil.

This show challenges taboos of that period – in particular focusing on homosexuality, drug addiction and the aids epidemic.

Lucy Scott, Study Programme Manager for Performing Arts, said: “I’m incredibly proud of this outstanding group of talented students. In just eight short weeks they have learned and delivered a quality performance to the standard of a professional company. Rent has brought a huge range of challenges as the students have both embraced and tackled a diverse, and perhaps controversial, range of topics.”

ESTART is launching and will replace our traditional ‘New Students’ Day’
