Course Overview

A Level Biology is a course designed to deepen the understanding of living systems, analytical techniques and scientific principles. The course is context driven, where content is delivered and learned with a theme, such as Cystic Fibrosis, cardiovascular disease, climate change, HIV/Tuberculosis and Parkinson's disease.

After The Course

Students move onto a wide variety of disciplines however, biology is a fundamental subject if students want to go on to study medicine, dentistry, veterinery surgery, all biological sciences, natural sciences, nursing, midwifery and other healthcare professions, such as physiotherapy, optometry, osteopathy and chiropractics. Subjects that are encouraged to be taken alongside biology include; chemistry, physics, maths, further maths, geography and psychology.

What Will I Learn

The two year course is split into 8 topics: year one units include; Lifestyle health and risk, genes and health, voice of the genome and biodiversity. Year two units include; on the wild side, infection, disease and immunity, respiration and exercise science, and neuroscience.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

Variety of delivery methods including classroom activities, discussions, presentations and directed study.

Tutorials

As a student, you will have weekly tutorials that are used for one to one support, progress updates, employability skills and preparation for University.

How Will I Be Assessed

3 exams after 2nd year (2 hours each) and 18 internally assessed core practicals for the practical endorsement.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 GCSE's at Grade 4 or above including English, Maths and Science at Grade 5.

Required Experience

No specific experience is required for this course but a keen interest in Biology is essential.
