HNC Community Coaching for England

When you combine your studies with your interest and passion for sport, great things happen. Whether it is your aim to develop your knowledge of sport, exercise and coaching, or nurture your coaching skills on the court, field or pitch, Yeovil College University Centre will help you to stand out from the crowd. This course will allow students to achieve a qualification at an equivalent level to the first year of a degree whilst undertaking a long-term placement or apprenticeship within a school or sport coaching setting.

Students completing this qualification as part of an apprenticeship must be working with a suitable employer. Students not completing the HNC Community Coaching for England as part of an apprenticeship must have a placement in an appropriate setting, there are some placements available within the Yeovil College sport department or with Yeovil Town FC, these placements are subject to successful interview and approval.

Graduates could continue at university to top their qualification up to a full Level 6 Bachelor’s Degree, dependent on available entry points. For students wishing to enter the workplace, they could pursue a career in the sport industry, for example coaching in the school or community setting.

Students will study a range of units including but not limited to; Coaching Practice, Community Coaching, Lifestyle Coaching, Professional Skills, Psychology in Sport & Exercise, Training and Fitness Testing, Nutrition, Anatomy and Physiology. Please be aware that modules studied may change periodically to reflect developments in the discipline or in response to student and stakeholder feedback. Students can always find the most up-to-date information about their modules and who is teaching them in the course handbook.

It is recommended that all students applying for this programme hold GCSEs in both English and Maths, or equivalent. If you do not already hold these qualifications, feel welcome to get in touch with university.centre@yeovil.ac.uk, as it may be possible for you to complete them before the course begins.

You’ll be taught by a team of lecturers with a range of industry experiences across the sport coaching sector.

Lecturers taken place on one day per week. You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. Lessons will consist of a mix of theory-based lecturers, practical coaching, group and project-based study using a range of assessment methods.

Students will have access to regular 1-1 tutorials with the teaching team to support their academic development and study.

Depending on the nature and location of the placement a student chooses to undertake, travel expenses might be incurred. Whilst some students may choose to buy their own copies of certain key texts this isn't essential as relevant resources are available through the College's Learning Resources Centre.

The HNC is assessed using a combination of internally assessed centre-devised assignments, this includes a variety of methods such as essays, portfolios, presentations, and practical observations.

Typical entry requirements are 48 UCAS tariff points from a relevant Level 3 qualification (such as two A levels or equivalent, BTEC Level 3 Diploma, Access to HE Diploma, or International Baccalaureate (with at least 24 points achieved)). We would typically expect the Level 3 qualification to be in a relevant area, such as Sport or a related field. UCAS tariff points from Scottish Highers or Advanced Highers, UCAS tariff points from the Irish Leaving Certificate and Welsh Baccalaureate are generally accepted. Grade 4 (C) in GCSE English and GCSE Maths (or equivalent) are highly desirable. Applicants will be invited to attend an admission interview before an offer is made and will be advised of the criteria in advance. We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over as of 1st September in the academic year of admission) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants. International applicants will be required to evidence English language skills - this could be an IELTS score of 5.5, with a minimum score of 5.5 in reading and writing, a grade 4 in GCSE English (or equivalent), or having recently completed a Level 3 qualification taught and assessed in the English language.
