Course Overview

ESOL classes are for speakers of English as a second language. You can improve your speaking/listening, reading and writing skills, as well as gain a qualification in English. We have a class for you, no matter your level.

Qualification Gained

For Entry level qualifications you will gain an ESOL Skills For Life certificate upon completion of all three units.

For Level 1 and 2 qualifications you will gain a Functional Skills English certificate.

After The Course

This course progresses through the levels up to Level 2 and upon completion, you may enter higher education, and apprenticeship or move directly into the work place.

What Will I Learn

Depending on your starting level (which will be decided through an initial assessment), you will focus on Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing skills throughout the course of the programme in preparation for exams to demonstrate your capability with these skills.

We will be following a set course book which will be introduced to you at the beginning of the course and it is recommended that you purchase the course book where possible, as this will also help with independent learning. Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation are key skills to master when learning a new language so these will also be embedded into the classes.

Our Lecturers

All of our lecturers are ESOL specialists with many years experience of teaching English to adults who are speakers of other languages.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

As outlined above, you will be taught the key skills in preparation for your exams to pass each level of your study.

Throughout the academic year, you will have a Speaking and Listening exam, a Reading exam and a Writing exam. You will receive practice for each of these exams before the live exams take place to prepare you for what to expect and to ensure you have the best chance to pass each exam.

Course Expenses

This course is likely to be free for you.

At interview, we will need to see evidence of your residency status (your sharecode, letter or permit) and any evidence of your income, or benefits.

How Will I Be Assessed

Upon enrolment you will be assessed to determine your current level of English and place you in an appropriate class. During the course you will undertake a range of assessments including written assignments as well as speaking and listening and reading tasks.

Entry Requirements

There are no previous qualifications required, as we will place you on a level that will best support your English needs.

Required Experience

No previous experience is necessary, as some learners will be joining the classes with no prior knowledge of the English language.
