Course Overview

A Level Further Maths is two-year course designed to stretch and challenge students who have a passion for mathematics. It covers pure maths (50%), statistics (25%) and mechanics (25%). To study the course, you will need a calculator capable of performing matrix calculations and supporting standard probability distributions.

After The Course

A Level Further Maths is an ideal qualification for students who are thinking of a career in the physical sciences, computer science, engineering and certain types of finance. A Level Further Maths is often required by top universities for degree courses with a strong mathematical content. In addition to Mathematics degrees, such courses may include Physics, Computer Science, Engineering and Economics degrees.

What Will I Learn

A Level Further Maths will take you beyond A Level Maths and will give you an introduction to topics that are usually taught at university such as complex numbers, matrices, hyperbolic functions, series and differential equations. In addition to further pure maths, you will be introduced to advanced concepts in statistics such as probability generating functions and hypothesis test errors. In mechanics, you will learn how to analyse complex collisions and dynamical systems. You must be studying A Level Maths in order to study A Level Further Maths.

English And Maths

You need five GCSEs at grade 9 - 4, including grade 9 - 7 in Maths.

As a student, you will have weekly tutorials that are used for one to one support, progress updates, employability skills and preparation for University.

How Will I Be Assessed

You will be assessed via homework and tests throughout the course and you will take a mock exam at the end of the first year. The A Level Further Maths exam (four 1.5 hour papers) will be taken at the end of the course.

Entry Requirements

  • A top grade in GCSE Maths is an essential pre-requisite for studying A Level Further Maths.
  • You will also study A Level Maths alongside.

No specific experience is required for this course but a keen interest in Maths is essential.
