Course Overview

GCSE English courses at Yeovil College primarily aim to help learners develop their skills in reading, writing and speaking and listening. You will learn: How to analyse the ways writers organise their ideas; how to explain your reaction to what you have read; how to write using language techniques; how to construct an argument effectively – like a writer. This GCSE English programme will be delivered through Microsoft teams with the requirement to attend on site for key assessment points throughout the year.

After The Course

Achieving the qualification at Grade 4 or above is commonly a sound stepping stone fulfilling the requirements of future, higher level courses at either College or University and is frequently a requirement placed on employees for progression through professional salary scales.

Our Lecturers

All our lecturers are English specialists with many years experience of teaching adults GCSE English. Our team of lecturers specialise in working with learners who find English a challenge and are able to adapt their teaching to what you require from the programme.

Teaching Learning and Assessment

You’ll be introduced to new ideas through discussion, sharing ideas and your own writing practice so that you build an understanding of the different techniques writers use to give information and influence your response to their work. You will be assessed at key assessment points to ensure that you are on track to achieve with us within the academic year.

How Will I Be Assessed

The GCSE English exam is comprised of 2 papers, each taking 1 hour and 45 minutes. These are national exam dates so please ask your lecturer for these when you start your programme to ensure you can attend. You will be assessed at regular points through the academic year to ensure that you are on track to achieve.

Entry Requirements

There are no previous qualifications required as we will place you on a level that will best support your English needs. If you are struggling on your course, we have a variety of offerings available to support your development of English with our Functional Skills English qualifications. If you are unsure, then please get in contact with us. For the remote delivered programme, you will need to be competent in using ICT systems including Microsoft Teams and Microsoft OneNote. We would recommend you have the following equipment: - A laptop/computer capable of running Microsoft Teams and Microsoft OneNote (Office 365 will be provided for you as part of your course) - A webcam - A microphone You will need to be competent in using ICT to be able to fully access the course effectively.
