The Role of the Personal Tutor
Each student is allocated a personal tutor. The tutor will meet with the tutor group at least once a week and will have regular one-to-one interviews with each tutee. The tutor plays a central role in several aspects of the students’ programme. Tutors are responsible for the following:
- Introducing students to the college and sorting out any difficulties which may arise over the first few days.
- Overseeing the academic progress of each student and helping them to deal with any problems arising from their college work.
- Dealing with any changes to a student’s programme.
- Helping students to manage their time and cope with the varying pressures placed on them at college.
- Offering students personal support and referring them on to other staff or agencies when appropriate.
- Meeting each tutee on a one to one basis at least twice a term.
- Helping students to find the right careers and higher education advice.
- Issuing warnings when a student’s attendance, academic performance or behaviour gives cause for concern.
Role of the 14-19 Curriculum Quality Manager
There is a 14-19 Curriculum Quality Manager in each Faculty who will oversee the pastoral support offered to students. They will work with teaching staff to ensure the quality of the provision as well as monitoring student attendance and being involved in any student support or disciplinary issues.
Role of the Faculty Director
Each department has a Faculty Director who has overall responsibility for the students’ programmes. They are collegemanagers whose duties include managing a team of staff, their role is being similar to that of a Head of Year in a school.
Students who run into difficulties may be referred to the Faculty Director for advice or disciplinary action. They monitor student progress and work with students whose progress is giving cause for concern.
The Faculty Director writes references and supervises applications to Higher Education in conjunction with Tutors and the Director of 14-19 curriculum.
