Literacy

Introduction

Firstly, all Skills for Life Literacy courses are FREE!

Welcome to the Skills for Life department where we offer you the chance to improve your literacy skills in order to help you gain employment, help your children with their homework or to help you feel more confident in dealing with everyday activities that involve speaking and listening, reading and writing.

Just making the decision to do something about your literacy skills is 90% of the job done!

Entry requirements

There is no entry requirement in terms of qualifications needed to attend a literacy course.  All we ask is that you have a commitment to attend sessions regularly and are willing to work towards an appropriate qualification.

Duration

Classes run for two hours.

Mornings:  9.30 am – 11.30 am
Afternoons  1.00pm – 3.00 pm or 1.30 pm – 3.30 pm
Evenings:  6.30 pm – 8.30 pm

Classes take place throughout the day and evening. So if you have children to pick up from school, are in full time employment or work shifts there will be a class available that you can attend.

Progression and Accreditation

While you are learning new skills you will also be working towards a qualification.
These could include the following:

City & Guilds Literacy Certificate Entry Level
City & Guilds National Adult Literacy Test at both Level 1 and Level 2
City & Guilds Key Skills Communication Certificate at Level 1 and Level 2

Tutors and students with certificates

As well as boosting your confidence, gaining a literacy qualification can also help you progress onto other vocational courses.

Courses available

There are a wide range of literacy courses available.  These courses are tailored to your own needs so you will be always working on skills that will help you.  Your tutor will also make sure you are learning in a way that suits your own learning style and that learning is set at the correct level so you will always feel in control.

Locations

Courses are available at the main campus on Mudford Road and the North Dorset Skills Centre in Shaftesbury.
