Full-time Student Questions

I’m not able to come to the Information Evenings. Can I come at another time?
Of course! You can contact us any time in the year for a campus tour or a chat about the courses we have on offer. Just call Edward Thompson on 01935 845360 for more details.

I’m really nervous about starting college!
You are not on your own! It is an anxious time for students who have spent a long time at secondary school and who are now embarking on new experiences at college. We ensure that your time at College is exciting, productive and rewarding and we have an excellent track record in helping new students settle in quickly.

I can’t decide on a course - who can I ask for help?
There are lots of people who you can ask for help when discussing choices after school. Your Head of House or Careers Teacher will be able to advise you, as well as Connexions. Don’t forget that you can also call us too. Contact the Customer Liaison and Enrolment Team on 01935 423921 for help and advice.

How do I apply? And is there a deadline?
You can apply from 1 October 2010 until 27 May 2011. Although we will continue to accept applications after this date, our most popular courses fill quickly, so apply early to have a better chance of getting on the course you really want.  Receipt of your application will be acknowledged and, once processed, you will be invited for a first interview. Daytime interviews take place at local schools and evening interviews are at the main college campus in Yeovil. Interviews began in November 2010 for courses starting the following year.

Application Forms are available from your careers teacher, Connexions offices in Somerset and Dorset or from College Reception. They can also be downloaded from the College website. This means you can practice before filling out your final form. Completed application forms should be handed in to your school or directly to the College. If you have already left school, please send it to the Customer Liaison and Enrolment Team at the College.

I left school a while ago, will a reference from an employer be acceptable?
Yes. Please add the details on your application form. You will also need to have evidence of previous examination results already obtained, although mature applicants have more flexible entry requirements.

Can I apply online?
Yes. You can apply online via our online application form.

What if I don’t get the grades I need?
Use the entry requirements in this prospectus to help you make a realistic decision on the course(s) you could study with us. If your actual examination results are not what you expected, or you have changed your mind, we can discuss the options open to you.  Call us on 01935 423921.

Can I get financial help whilst studying?
Yes. For more information, see the Student Finance pages.

Do I have to pay tuition fees for my course?
Tuition fees are free if you are under 19 on the 1st September in the year you start your course. If you are over 19, you may be eligible for fee remission if you receive certain benefits or tax credits or have not already achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification. For full details please contact the Student Services Team on 01935 845452 or email info@yeovil.ac.uk.

Do I have to pay for books and equipment at college?
As a College student there may be additional costs involved in purchasing books, specialist equipment/materials or taking part in field trips. You will be given all this information prior to starting with us, usually at your first interview or during Information Evenings.

A learner resource charge is also paid by all full-time students (excluding Apprentices). This is currently £50 and pays for your ID card, 500 printer credits, your student planner and contributes towards enrichment activities and use of resources.

Would I have to wear an ID Badge at Yeovil College?
Yes. All students and staff must wear photo ID badges at all times while on campus to ensure everyone’s safety. Yeovil College takes security very seriously and has established a close relationship with the local Community Police Officer, who holds frequent beat surgeries for students on site.

What is the social life like?
Although we emphasise the importance of working hard at College, it is not always about studying! By taking an active part in enrichment activities and Student Union events held throughout the year, you can be sure that you will have a well-balanced and rewarding experience of College life.  We also offer a range of sport and fitness opportunities, including activities for talented sportspersons.

Can I bring a car to college?
If you have a car, you are welcome to drive to College, although there are a limited number of parking spaces. Many of our students use public transport to get to us. The College operates a ‘green’ policy and there is ample parking space for bicycles, mopeds etc. See our How to Find Us page for more details.
