Introduction
This BTEC qualification is a work-related qualification which focusses on your development of practical skills and underpinning knowledge of sport.  This qualification provides industry recognised occupational standards and you will have the opportunity to study for the Community Sports Leadership Award and a First Aid qualification within the first year.  In the second year, you can complete the Higher Sports Leadership Award.  You will also be encouraged to obtain at least one national governing body award in a specific sport.

Entry requirements
You need at least five GCSE at grade C or above, one of which must be English Language.  You must also demonstrate a keen interest in studying Sport and have a proven commitment to participating in sport.

Duration
This is a two year, full-time course

Career Prospects/Progression
If you successfully complete this course, you can progress to a higher qualification, such as the NVQ Vocational Qualification in Coaching, Leadership and Instructing.  This qualification can also lead to a Foundation Degree Course, such as those available at the University Centre Yeovil (UCY).  Previous students have studied Sport, Leisure Management, Sport Coaching and Sport Development.  Alternatively, you can apply for employment as a Local Authority Sports Development Officer, a Community Sports Coach, a Youth Leader or in other sports-related positions.

Course expenses
Sports kit – Approximately £105.  Course text book – £25.  Each student is encouraged to have their own copy as this will help with assignments.  Community Sports Leadership Award – £26.25.  Higher Sports Leadership Award – £37.75.  National Governing Body Awards are charged separately.

Work Experience
You will complete a two week placement related to your area of interest.  Past students have completed their placement at Yeovilton, primary or secondary schools, Yeovil Town Football Club, Goldenstones, Yeovil Hospital and various sports coaching companies.

Trips/Residentials
Opportunities include visits to Wimbledon, Twickenham and Yeovil Town Football Club, as well as a ski trip and a sports careers convention.
